COVID-19 Phase 3 restart update:  The Provincial Health Order requiring proof of vaccine verification is in place for some activities, services and programs.  For more details on the order check out the COVID-19 page.  Face masks are mandatory inside the facility while not engaged in physical activity.

COVID-19 Update

Staff continue to monitor the information and guidelines provided by the Province, Island Health and other authorities to develop plans to reopen Strathcona Gardens facilities and services in a manner that ensures the health and safety of the public and staff.

Information Regarding the BC Vaccine Requirement
Throughout the pandemic, the Strathcona Regional District has followed guidelines and orders as directed by the Provincial Health Office, and guidance with program or sport specific standards set by the British Columbia Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA), viaSport, and other sport governing bodies. Going forward, the Strathcona Regional District will continue to follow a similarly informed approach.

With respect to the Province’s announcement of August 23, 2021, regarding the BC proof of vaccine requirement and expectations to show proof of ID for discretionary activities; the Regional District will work with Island Health the BCRPA, and other governing authorities to develop protocols and guidelines. As more information becomes available, the Regional District will communicate updates to procedures and protocols for admittance to the facility.

For details on the Provincial proof of vaccination requirement, visit https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/covid-19/vaccine/proof#required.

The updated Provincial Gathering and Events Order, containing the new Proof of Vaccination section, provides information on applicable requirements for programs, events and services at Strathcona Gardens.  (updated September 10, 2021)

The most important thing BC residents aged 12 and older can do to help our communities and our lives to get back to normal is get vaccinated.  Anyone 12 and over who hasn’t yet had a first dose can now walk in to any of the Island Health mass immunization clinics.

Learn more about how vaccines and how to get vaccinated on the province’s website.

Mandatory Mask Mandate
As of Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2021, masks must be worn in all indoor public spaces throughout B.C. to help slow the transmission of COVID-19 as B.C. prepares for the fall and respiratory illness season.  This applies to the common areas of sport and fitness centres when not engaged in physical activity. https://news.gov.bc.ca/releases/2021HLTH0053-001665

PHASE 3 BC Restart – July 1, 2021
In Step 3 of the BC Restart plan, organizations are no longer required to maintain a COVID-19 Safety Plan and can instead transition to communicable disease prevention. Some other key takeaways from a recreation facility perspective are the following:

  • Physical distancing markers no longer required
  • Masking – now recommended for those 12 and over and those not double vaccinated
  • No requirement for enhanced cleaning protocols
  • Use of showers, change rooms, lobby space, and other facility amenities can be reopened

In short, all returns to pre-pandemic normal for recreation except seated organized gatherings is 50 per cent of capacity both indoors and outdoors.
