1. Why are the drop-in and membership prices at Strathcona Gardens going up?
To maintain the quality and quantity of services offered at Strathcona Gardens, the SRD reviews the rate of fees and charges at our facility every year. Rising maintenance costs and improvements, employee wages, and market adjustments all play a role in the SRD’s decision to increase costs.
2. Where can the bylaw be viewed?
“Strathcona Gardens Recreation Complex Fees and Charges Bylaw 2018, Amendment No. 5” is available in the bylaw directory at srd.ca/bylaws
3. When do the fees take effect?
Effective July 1, passes will only be sold at the new rate. At your request, all remaining 10x passes under the prior fee structure will be refunded as a credit to your account in preparation for the new fee structure. The credit can be used towards the purchase of any products or programs in our facility.
4. What other fees are increasing?
The Fees and charges bylaw review includes all fees pertaining to the facility. This includes drop-in admission and passes, as well as rental and program rates.
5. What are the new auto-renewal passes?
The one-month and 10-visit passes can now be purchased in a convenient auto-renew option, which gives our patrons an additional discount.
6. Why is there a different fee for Aquatic Fitness Classes?
The Deep Water Motion, Fluid Motion, Adapted Aquatic and Ortho Management classes are the only programs in the facility that currently include an instructor for the price of a drop-in fee. Moving forward, these will be registered classes to bring them in alignment with our other instructed programs. As such, the SRD is increasing the rate of this program to assist in the costs of the instructor. Standard drop-in rates are now for programs that do not have an instructor.
7. What are the options available for Aquatic Fitness participants?
Aquatic Fitness participants can either register for a single visit using the single visit Fitness Admission fee or buy a One Month pass which will allow registration for flexible fitness classes at zero charge (you scan your 1 month pass when attending the class). The 10-visit drop in pass is only for uninstructed visits. Fitness instructors will be taking attendance prior to each class. View the PDF in this link to see a comparison chart of purchasing a single visit pass each time vs. a monthly pass.
8. Can the current 10x pass continue to be used, or does a new monthly fitness pass need to be purchased?
Yes, the existing 10x pass can be used for fitness classes until August 31, 2025. Effective September 1, 10x passes will only be eligible for non-instructed drop in. All 10x passes sold after July 1st will not be eligible for fitness classes.
9. What happened to the preschooler and caregiver rate?
We have replaced the preschool + caregiver rate with a new caregiver + child rate. One child aged 0-6 has free admission with any adult or senior. Each additional child ages 0-6 is $2.00. Children ages 0-6 must be supervised by an adult in our pools, so we revised our fees reflect this by having a child get in free with a paying adult. We hope this makes using our facility more affordable for families with children under 7 and encourages direct adult supervision in the pool. Note that you must have 1 adult for every 3 children ages 0-6 in the pool.
10. What happens to my 10x child pass that I purchased when the pre-schooler + caregiver rate was in effect?
If you purchased a 10x child pass before July 1 to use with the pre-schooler + caregiver rate, we are giving you an extra buffer of 2 months to use up your pass with the adult getting in free until August 31. Alternatively, you can refund the remaining drop-in admissions left on your 10x child pass and use the balance to purchase a new 10x adult pass where one child ages 0-6 using our facility with you will get in free after July 1.
12. When does the family rate apply?
Depending on how many people in the group, reception will calculate which rate is cheaper for the group, either the family rate or the caregiver + additional child rates.
13. How much are additional children when a drop-in with a previously purchased preschooler and caregiver pass is being used?
The additional child rate of $2.00 would apply in this case.
14. What happened to the shower fee?
As our facility evolves, it is a challenge to differentiate between shower patrons and full facility patrons. We encourage everyone to be active, so welcome all patrons to partake in the full facility offerings.
*All 10x passes purchased after July 1, 2025 will be valid for three years from the date of purchase. Our drop-in and membership fees include all applicable taxes.
